REVERSE LIVING – WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER AN UPSIDE DOWN HOME DESIGN

If you have been keeping abreast of the latest trends in housing you will have heard that Upside Down Living is becoming very popular in Western Australia, especially in our coastal suburbs.
Sometimes known as upper living or reverse living, the concept is to swap the living areas, traditionally found on the ground level, with the bedrooms, traditionally found on the upper level. So, in effect, upside down living. Makes sense right?
This trend initially began in Scandinavia, where it is very popular, and has moved to Australia, USA and the UK in recent years.
The primary intention of upside down living, is to maximize any potential views of your property, whether they be coastal, river, acreage, parkland, mountain or whatever view you are lucky enough to have. Even the view over the 18th hole at your local golf course could be beckoning you on a daily basis. And who wouldn’t love to relax on their expansive first floor balcony, glass in hand, enjoying the glorious summer sunsets in Perth.
There are a number of other advantages to reverse living which you may like to consider if the general idea of upside down living strikes a chord with you. As well as immersing your living areas with the magnificent vistas your block may have to offer, having your living areas upstairs will also maximize coastal breezes (being the famous ‘Fremantle Doctor’ for those lucky enough to live in Perth), as well as the natural light during the day.
Having your main living areas and master bedroom on the upper level of your home will also guarantee your views are unobstructed by any garden fencing, trees or neighbouring houses. In effect, depending on your design, you could have sweeping panoramic views throughout the upper level of your home, ensuring your living areas will be a great place to kick back, relax, reflect, entertain, cook, study, paint, read…or just be.
More and more new designs for upside down living homes are becoming available as the reverse living concept grows ever more popular here in Perth. The current upside down home designs are practical, pleasing to the eye and have a very appealing street presence with large balconies to the front of the homes.
If you have teenagers or independent older children still living at home, why not dedicate the ground floor rooms to them. With their bedrooms downstairs (and yours upstairs), plus perhaps a rumpus room or cinema room where they can entertain their boisterous, noisy friends.
For empty nesters who are lucky enough to have house guests, frequent visits from the in-laws, elderly parents or international relatives visiting Perth for a few days, add a little kitchenette downstairs and again the ground floor can be their little home from home, leaving the expansive views, large roomy balcony, sea breezes, and natural light as the hub of the home where you can all share some time together.
